Effect of life style factors and pollutants on semen quality (Project Leader: Dr. Rafael Lafuente)
The contribution of the male gamete in the formation of the embryo can be decisive for the outcome of fertility treatments. While in the early years of ART the field focused on obtaining motile spermatozoa, more recently the focus shifted to the isolation of functional spermatozoa. We are interested in studying factors that can affect sperm functionality and developing diagnostic technologies to evaluate the sperm function. We are researching the effects of environmental factors such as air pollutants and lifestyles on sperm quality as well as the study of the effect of antioxidant treatment and novel diagnostic techniques on sperm function.
CLINICAL
Optimization of IVF protocols through freeze-all strategies and classic IVF (Project Leader: Dr. Karinna Lattes)
Our main objective is to compare reproductive and perinatal outcomes in patients undergoing IVF cycles with fresh embryo transfers and those where the whole embryo cohort is cryopreserved electively and transferred in subsequent frozen embryo transfer cycles, a strategy also known as “freeze-all” or, more recently, “freeze-only”.
We also aim to identify variables within these cycles that allow us to optimize reproductive outcomes for our patients.
